Gender and Conflict Analysis of Afghanistan

Tearfund

Bodhi conducted a comprehensive conflict analysis of Afghanistan for Tearfund, focusing on the intersection between gender and conflict. The study identified key trends in conflicts, mapped crucial stakeholders in the conflict and peacebuilding space, and examined the role of women in both conflict dynamics and peacebuilding efforts. We applied an integrated approach to conflict analysis, incorporating political economy and gender analysis, to understand not only the root causes of conflict and fragility in the target locations, but also to understand the relationship between the broader political economy and conflict dynamics at the local level. The research explored the different ways in which conflict has an impact on men, women and youth, aged 18-30. The project delivered recommendations for addressing gender-specific challenges in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Additionally, we developed likely scenarios for the future of the Afghan conflict, considering gender dimensions. This analysis aimed to inform more effective, gender-sensitive approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding in Afghanistan. Fieldwork took the form of key informant interviews and focus group discussion with affected communities and was undertaken in Herat and in Kabul, with the assistance of IAM Herat, IAM Kabul, and SERVE. The communities covered in Herat were Memizak village and the Jebrael area of the city of Herat. In Kabul, the communities visited were in Shakar Dara and in Shahrak-e-Etifaq.
