Joint Gender Security Needs Assessment and Gender Analysis of Security Sector in South Sudan

UN Women

Bodhi conducted a Joint Gender Security Needs Assessment and Gender Analysis in South Sudan for UN Women's contribution to the Peace Building Fund - Security Sector Reform initiative. The purpose of the study was to identify critical gender related security issues, including an understanding of the security needs of men and women, boys and girls, and minorities; gender-specific perceptions of security and fulfilment of their security needs or lack thereof; existing mechanisms available to meet people’s security needs (formal and informal) and gaps in their availability; and specific obstacles and barriers faced by particular groups of people in fulfilling their security needs. We implemented extensive qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including 10 key informant interviews, 46 focus group discussions, a comprehensive desk review of more than 126 documents, and a quantitative household survey with 1286 participants to understand the security needs, concerns, and priorities for girls, women, boys, and men. Bodhi also analysed current security sector laws, policies, and processes to assess their gender responsiveness. This project supported a systematic analysis of access to security and informed the creation of a National Action Plan on Gender and Security Sector Reform, aiming to enhance gender-responsive security practices in South Sudan.
